Cloud CCTV, an imperfect and perfect solution:

Suitability of application is one of the main tenets of successful innovation. When advances don’t meet end users’ actual applications or infrastructure, most benefits are lost.
On the face of it, cloud CCTV systems do in fact offer genuine improvements that add value, namely off-site storage/backup and access to remote CCTV cameras from any internet enabled device. Where these benefits begin to fall down are in the practical applications and requirements that cloud-based systems demand. In this article, we explore the pitfalls of traditional cloud CCTV systems and what to look for so that your CCTV installation business can still benefit from cloud CCTV's benefits. (Click here to skip to the solution)
Holes in the cloud
The first, and possibly largest hurdle that cloud-based systems face is the amount of bandwidth they require. Even a single camera recording in HD can put a strain on a network. As the number of cameras in a system increases so does the bandwidth required, even with greatly reduced resolution. A typical internet connection can support 3-4 cloud cameras at most. Nearly all end users will not have, nor will they be prepared to install, (a) dedicated line(s) just for their CCTV needs.
Next is the cost of making an existing system ‘cloud ready’. Cameras already installed on premises are unlikely to have cloud capabilities. They may need to be replaced entirely - an expense many businesses will be unhappy to endure. Alternatively, they may be able to be connected to a cloud VSaaS service (what the majority of cloud CCTV providers on the market offer) - which have their own set of challenges with a narrow range of camera compatibility, exposure to the aforementioned bandwidth constraints and significant mandatory monthly costs.
Mandatory monthly costs are another consideration. Usually, going over the cloud means putting every single camera through the cloud and entails a monthly per camera fee. If we take the local convenience shop with an average of eight cameras as an example, paying a monthly fee for every camera is cost prohibitive.
Another inherent issue for cloud-based systems is network connectivity – a disruption to the network will stop the system in its tracks – effectively adding multiple points of fallibility to the system. At best, network failure means an inability to access live and recorded footage. At worst, many cloud cameras stop recording completely when there are network disruptions.
Finally, from an installer’s standpoint, cloud service providers often offer their services directly to end clients and/or publicly advertise the commercial aspects of their services. This leaves the installer with a tricky proposition of offering a service to their clients, supporting it, but ultimately being unable to reap commercial justification for their efforts.
Having said all of that, it doesn’t mean that the benefits of a cloud-based system are unobtainable; it just requires a more practical and reasoned approach.

Benefits without compromise:
It’s clear that while purely cloud-based solutions have their merit, the weaknesses and associated costs are an unreasonable compromise.
The solution sits in a hybrid system that offers all of the benefits of cloud without the drawbacks. (Click here to read more about Xanview's hybrid CCTV system.)
Xanview, a British video surveillance system provider, offers an elegant system that is bandwidth efficient, not entirely reliant on the internet to function and is highly cost effective.
Xanview’s hybrid CCTV system provides reliable remote access to all site and offsite recording backup to as few or as many cameras as needed. Therefore, monthly subscription costs can be tailored to clients needs and budgets. The system is highly bandwidth efficient and importantly, remains completely functioning during network disruption.
Additionally, Xanview’s system integrates with the majority of cameras (both IP & analogue) on the market, allowing for seamless installations with none of the high costs. Our hybrid system also carries a host of analytics built-in and allows for the addition of a wide range of features such as licence plate recognition, face-detection and many others.
Xanview’s dedication to practical application without compromising on features has developed a reliable, cutting-edge and cost-effective solution.
Xanview is installed and sold through professional security installers.
